Meet Joe Demers…

Joe Demers is the son of Eugene L. Demers and the late Anna Soares Demers. A lifelong resident of Woburn and graduate of Woburn Memorial High School in 2003, Joe attended Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History/Secondary Education. Upon returning to Woburn from college, Joe became civically active coaching youth sports, working for the Woburn Recreation Department as a Parks Instructor for youth programs and running for Woburn City Council in 2007. While Joe’s first run for office was unsuccessful, he learned what it took to run a campaign, be responsive to constituents and what it takes to be a local official.

In 2008, Joe worked on State Representative James J. Dwyer’s initial campaign for State Representative. After his election, Representative Dwyer hired Joe as his legislative aide where he has loyally and diligently served for the past 10 years. Over that course of time, Joe has gained great experience in the State Legislature working side-by-side with Representative Dwyer on multiple issues including education, health care, criminal justice, public safety, transportation and the opioid crisis. Joe has gained knowledge of the issues that face both Woburn and Reading and has developed working relationships with federal, state, and local officials to find solutions.

In 2013, with a furthered commitment to public service, Joe ran for a seat on the Woburn School Committee. He was elected and has served the past 5 years on the School Committee, most recently being elected Chairman by his peers. In addition to serving as Chair, he has served as chair of the subcommittees on Curriculum and Communication, Resource Utilization, and Student Services and Achievement. He has brought a “roll-up-your-sleeves” approach to working to reform the school district and has challenged systemic norms while respecting community traditions.

Joe is running for State Representative because he has the knowledge, experience, and skill set to make him an effective state legislator from day one.
